Farmer’s Market Preview: 8/14/-8/17

Today we preview the various FRESHFARM markets around the area. The highlights:

  • At the Penn Quarter market (TODAY from 3:00-7:00pm), Rochelle Schaetzl of Nando’s Peri Peri, a new South African restaurant chain, will be giving a cooking demonstration. See here for more.
  • The Dupont Circle market (Sunday from 9:00am-1:00pm) will have a demonstration by Frank Morales of Rustico at 11:00am.

In other farmer’s market news, evidently a new market has opened in the King St. Garden Park. Every Wednesday from 3:00-7:00pm.

August 6: Highfield Dairy is back at market this week with goat cheese and tarts, fruit sorbets, beef, pork and eggs.

At market this week: Damson plums debut at market this week from D&S Farm. These tart plums make the best tarts and jam. Quaker Valley will have melons, berries and peaches. Tons of tomatoes at Long Meadow and Sunnyside Farm & Orchard along with plenty of summer veggies. Lynnvale will make a summer bouquet for your table or for gift-giving. Atwaters and Bonaparte have breads, sweets and more!

HARBOR EAST

Saturday, August 16: Sofi’s Crepes is back at market!

At market this week: Enjoy a sweet crepe as you check out the produce, meats and eggs, cheeses, handmade soaps and cheeses at market. Little Greenhouse has selection of orchids and potted plants to brighten your home or office. Summer bounty of peaches, tomatoes, melons and sweet corn–perfectly ripe and delicious! Springfield has pasture-raised meats and eggs. Breezy Willow has handmade soaps and lotions.

H STREET
Saturdays, 9 am to noon, 625 H St, NE

Market is OPEN now through November 22, 2008.

Smith Family Farm is hosting a Family Farm weekend on September 27-28. Children can visit the hen house, collect eggs and ride ponies! You can purchase lunch including grilled meats from the farm. Check out your Thanksgving turkey and pack a cooler to take home all natural, free range meats including Angus beef, pork, poultry and eggs.

At market this week: Quaker Valley has luscious melons including a very sweet green Israeli. Richfield has watermelon and lima beans. Lots of tomatoes from Blueberry Hill and Richfield. Smith Family Farm is at market with your favorite meats and Highfield will have goat cheese, tarts, sorbets.Atwaters has scones, breads, cookies and chunky gazpacho! Keswick has cheese, yogurt and chocolate pudding. Cedarbrook has pasture-raised pork.

PENN QUARTER

Thursday, August 14: Chef at Market, Rochelle Schaetzl of Nando’s Peri Peri. This South African restaurant chain will open their first DC restaurant this week. Check out the HotSauceBlog for more information!

At market this week: Find everything for your weekend entertaining at this downtown market! Butter Pot and Sand Hill have your favorite summer veggies. Pot Pie has eggs; Bonaparte has sweet and savory tarts, pastries, breads. Arbec has orchids to grace your table.

SILVER SPRING
Saturdays, 9 am to 1 pm, downtown on Ellsworth Dr.

Saturday, August 16: Organization at market is “The Bridge DC” from 9am to 1pm.

At market this week: Charlie Koiner was only at market for an hour last week because he had to get all his entries to the Montgomery County Fair. Stop by and ask Charlie about his ribbons! Check out all the farmstands at market for the freshest, locally grown foods from apples to zucchini, including pasture-raised meats and eggs, goat cheese, cut flowers and tasty baked goods from Atwaters and Praline!
