More RW Suggestions

Todd Kliman, Wasghintonian food and wine editor, just finished up with his weekly chat, and he’s posted some Restaurant Week recommendations. Of course, he goes into a lot of different categories than we have the chance to here, but I noted that he leaves Poste on his final list of recommended restaurants (as this blog right here did earlier this week) and only rejects Cafe Atlantico because they have extended their promotion an extra week. I guess we can file this under the category of “even a blind squirrel finds a nut once and a while.” [Kliman Online @ Washingtonian]

Brunch at Tabaq Bistro

Last weekend, your editor and a couple of friends had brunch at U st. bar/club/eatery Tabaq. As always, sat on the fantastic roof patio and enjoyed $3 Bloody Marys and Mimosas (or at least some did; your editor is trying to cut down on his pre-afternoon drinking regimen). Well, turns out one of our diners runs his own blog as well, called Brunch DC. Check it out. [Brunch DC]

Once Again, Free Events

Once again, the Washington Post’s invaluable list of free events for the upcoming week. A good mix of food (the Stone Soul Picnic at RFK) movies (The Apartment at Screen on the Green and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane at the National Theater) and good old fashioned boozing (bartender birthday party at the Black Cat). See, I’m not just copying and pasting the link. [Going Out Gurus]

Whole Foods and the Thrifty Consumer

Can Whole Foods convince the American Shopper that $6.99 a pound for chicken breast is worth it in a declining economy? The bigger question for your editor: can I replace my WF shopping list anywhere else in this city? [NYT]

One Week Not Enough?

Many RW hotspots are extending their promotions, either starting early or (in most cases) going a week or two late. RW extensions begin Monday the 4th and continue through the end of the month. [Going Out Gurus]

Dolcezza Artisinal Gelato at 14th and U Market

Dolcezza, a local gelato/sorbet shop here in DC, will be setting up a booth at the 14th and U farmer’s market this Saturday from 9am-1pm. Dolcezza makes its gelato from local milk and local flavorings. You can already find their stands at the Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter and Falls Church markets, but this is their first stop by the U St. Corridor. Yes, this probably trends closer to “epicure” than in does to “thrifty,” but check it out anyway. Full announcement after the jump. [Dolcezza]

More Good Stuff

A video segment asking diners of their opinion on the new “Good Stuff Eatery.” Pretty much confirms everything I said here…not that that makes me a better blogger or anything. </smugness> [Best Bites Blog]

DC Sales Tax Holiday

This may be way off topic, but thriftiness is thriftiness, wherever you can find it. Next week, all clothing, shoes, back to school items and more are exempt from DC’s 5.75% sales tax. I’ll personally be at Filene’s Basement – yeah I’m quite chic. [DC Tax and Revenue, via Shop Around Blog]

Bad Pizza

As we’ve maintained, there is both good cheap and bad cheap. Prince of Petworth is searching out the worst take-out pizza in town. I’ll second the first comment and say that the jumbo slice next Tabaq’s on U St. is some truly foul stuff, not nearly redeemed by the techno dance party vibe of the store itself.[Prince of Petworth]
